Highest Rated Freshman State Senator |

The 2009 Legislative session was described by many as the toughest Nevada has ever seen. As a freshman legislator, it was a fascinating process. Due to the dire state of Nevada's economy and the extreme budget shortfalls, it was a very serious session and overall, a humbling experience. In an end-of-session Las Vegas Review Journal poll of legislators, journalists and lobbyists, I was honored to have been rated the highest freshman State Senator.

Health Care Reform Forum Discusses President’s Plan |

On June 30, I attended a health care reform forum sponsored by Organizing for America. This informative forum featured a panel of medical professionals and media who discussed the various issues related to obtaining affordable health care and the solutions proposed by President Obama. The forum was such a success that more are being planned for the future, which I will post in the calendar section. Promoting Financial Literacy for Young Nevadans |

If there is one thing these difficult economic times have taught us, it is an important lesson about the value of financial literacy. Complex financial decisions play a greater part in adult life than they have been in the past. It is our moral responsibility to prepare our youth for their adult life, and in these times, that includes basic principles of finance. That’s why I am sponsoring SB 317, legislation which would require Nevada schools to educate our youth on the basics of navigating the financial system, including managing a mortgage, understanding credit principles, and balancing personal budgets. Senate Bill 317 also provides that a pupil must demonstrate satisfactory completion of the instruction in financial literacy by passing an exam before receiving a diploma.
