Allison Copening, a second-generation Las Vegan who helped open the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, will officially kick off her campaign for State Senate District 6 with a public rally on Saturday, April 26.

Copening has deep roots in the community — her grandparents first settled in Las Vegas in the 1920’s — and is a well-respected former community affairs director for KLAS-TV, philanthropist and public relations professional who has operated her own businesses. In 1998, she was honored as a “Top 40 Under 40” by the Las Vegas Business Press.

She went on to hold high-level community relations and public affairs positions with respected organizations such as Pulte Homes/Del Webb, the Las Vegas Springs Preserve and the Las Vegas Valley Water District. While working for Pulte Homes, she served as president of the Board of Directors for the Community Association of Sun City Aliante, an active adult community of approximately 2,000 residences.

Copening started volunteering at the Torrey Pines Convalescent Center when she was 15 years old and hasn’t stopped serving the community since. She has earned a reputation as a problem solver with a passion for working with others to find answers to problems facing children, seniors and the business community. She is currently a two-term trustee with the Desert Research Institute Research Foundation and serves as president of the Board of Directors for Child Focus, an organization that serves children living in the state’s foster care system.

Senate District 6 will be one of the most targeted races in the state this election year. It is represented by extreme right-wing Republican Bob Beers, yet the district has swung from a Republican voter registration advantage to having 439 more registered Democrats than Republicans.

“Right now, our state is dealing with many critical issues. We’re cutting our state budget due to economic restraints, facing an unparalleled health care crisis in the Hepatitis C scare, and our education system continues to face serious challenges,” Copening said. “I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and I know the families in Senate District 6 want a representative who will fight to improve their quality of life. We need real solutions, and I’ve spent my life working with people throughout the Las Vegas Valley to help provide these solutions.”
